Is it possible to demonstrate whether there is a scientific link between environmental pollution and human health ? Is it possible to define in a scientifically correct manner the role of lifestyle and food on male fertility and the link between pollution and development of food intolerances which also affect the fertility? Is it possible to identify reliable tests that indicate a condition of stress and cellular alert for possible diseases not only reproductive but also chronic degenerative such as cancer, diabetes, etc. Moreover, is it possible to counteract the negative effects of pollution on human health with nutritional strategies and " reclaim " the man in the areas at risk? The research project EcoFoodFertility tries to give answers to these questions. The project, initially born in the Campania region, in a specific zone located to the Northern and Southern of Naples and Caserta provinces respectively, (Land of Fires) in order to identify a science-based link between the alarming rates of environmental pollution and the alarming increase in chronic degenerative diseases which occurred in the last decades and to indicate future injury prevention strategies, today involves different areas of Italy and Europe , becoming a research model for polluted areas . An "open" project , in which making use of medical experts and researchers from institutions of absolute reliability (CNR, Public Health Agencies , universities and research centers) will involve the regional and European associations sensitive to the issues of environment and health in a campaign to raise awareness, communication and fundraising to immediately start the research.
EcoFoodFertility research focuses on the sperm, which for easy availability and high sensitivity to environmental pollutants, are considered ideal bioindicators of environmental damage and trusted sentinels of human health. It is suspected, in fact, that the presence of chemical substances ( such as heavy metals, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls , nanoparticles ) in the environment and in foods not only reduces the quality and quantity of sperm, but change the DNA of the same and reduce the cytoprotective defenses. In particular, the quantitative assessment of sperm DNA damage, with innovative techniques , in correlation with the quantitative measurement of environmental toxins in the blood and especially in the semen, not only has diagnostic value , but takes on even more importance as a major primary prevention, because it becomes a predictive analysis tool for more serious diseases. Therefore, EcoFoodFertility project intends, in a systematic way, assessing the impact of environmental and dietary conditions on male reproductive function, check more clearly how and how much environmental pollution directly and adversely affects the semen quality, if, how and how much it affects the development of food intolerances which adversely affect semen quality, and again, and how and how much the eating habits impact on reproductive function. Finally, the project aims to define approaches to detoxification and prevention strategies for possible future damage. The research project which has multi-disciplinary approach provides, as well as the recruitment of Italy in two different areas of Campania high (area of Acerra , Nola , Giugliano - Area North of Naples , Land of Fires ), and low (area of Oliveto Citra - High - Medium Sele and Cilento in province of Salerno ) index of environmental pressure, even individuals from areas of high and low index of environmental pressure in Spain, Greece and the Czech Republic. The selection criteria : healthy males , 20-40 years old, non-smoking, non-drinking , non- drug and non-occupationally exposed . The subjects will be reviewed by a uro-andrology, toxicological analysis in blood and semen of heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, polycyclic hydrocarbons aromatici, nanoparticles, for cytological examination of blood lymphocytes, seminal examination, with particular attention to the evaluation redox status and sperm DNA. In addition, lifestyle and food habits, by a questionnaire will be analyzed and ultimately, accurate laboratory tests for the evaluation of food intolerances, particularly celiac disease and gluten-sensitive, will be carried out.
Even before the land reclamation is necessary, and above all possible and closest in time , the " reclamation " of man. EcoFoodFertility arises not only as a research project to investigate whether there is a causal link between environmental conditions and health status of the volunteers , but also to start a new prevention method based on innovative nutrition and detoxification addresses. In fact, in the next phase of the project, for those at risk, you will be able to follow personalized diets that can be supported by dietary supplements ( functional food ), taking account of the genetic and biochemical metabolism. This is not only to detoxify and therefore prevent more damage to the future, but also to avoid the predisposition to certain diseases and food allergies as well as in the study will be evaluated . In conclusion, a pilot project that would indicate potential public health strategies aimed at primary prevention and early diagnosis, particularly for people living in areas with high environmental impact .
